Among my top five worst coin investments are modified coins, such as genuine U.S. Mint products that have been altered by adding holographics or coloring. These coins are generally considered "damaged" by serious coin collectors, and you will only get the bullion value when you go to sell them, if that. I have heard of dealers discounting them because of the added impurities that the paint and other crap applied to the coins adds to the metal.
According to many experts, the best type of investment coins are rarer, key date coins issued by the United States, in the best grade you can afford to buy them in. If you can't afford to shell out $2,000 a coin to buy key dates in high grades, then buy common coins in the finest grades you can. Lower grade, common coins have historically not appreciated as much in value as key date coins do, so they are probably not a good investment choice (although they're great for filling up the holes in albums, especially with kids helping out!)

The first rule is � no matter the coin � never use harsh abrasives like silver polish. Abrasives scrape the top layer off of whatever they are polishing, and in the case of a coin, that top layer contains all of its detail and hence its numismatic value. Polishing in this way will leave the surface of the coin covered with tiny pits and scratches, not exactly conducive to preserving the coin's value. If you clean the coin using an abrasive, you'll get a shiny coin, but it will not be a coin that collectors are interested in. To see for yourself, try it on a penny, especially one from before 1982 (when they were 95% copper). The coin will be shiny and clean, but if you compare it to a similar coin, you will see that it also looks unnatural. Shiny, yes, but it will not look like it looked naturally when it was minted. Collectors eschew coins that don't look natural.

On my list of "do not buy" coins is those from the Franklin Mint and other premium collectibles mints (such as the Bradford Exchange, etc.) They are aggressive marketers who do sell genuine bullion coins (sometimes) but their coins usually do not have any after-market value among coin collectors and investors. You'll typically pay $45 plus for a one ounce silver coin that is only worth the value of its silver bullion when you go to sell it. (Silver bullion is at about $19 an ounce as I write this.)

Another type of luster seen on United States gold coins is satiny in texture. Satiny luster tends to be less attractive than frosty luster but it can be very appealing. I would describe it to the new collector as having asoft look and it is often seen on branch mint coins from the 19th century and on San Francisco issues from the 20th century.

2008 US Mint American Eagle gold and silver coins are quickly disappearing. Several sold out, some face elimination, and 2009 replacements are on the horizon.

Tables comparing 2007 and 2008 Mint sales figures emphasize coins that look to have been good buys. Plus, potential opportunities that may still exist. Before analyzing the tables, consider also:

US Mint discontinued coin products include the American Eagle Gold Uncirculated 1/2, 1/4, 1/10, and Four-Coin Sets. Only the one-ounce option will remain in 2009.

The Mint has scheduled several 2009 product releases, but no dates have yet been listed for American Eagles. 2008 coins that do not sell out will stop with 2009 launches.

The latest Mint sales figures comparing December 2008 week 3 to week 4 indicate high demand for American Eagle gold proof coins, and even greater demand for the uncirculated options.

The proof one-half ounce and four-coin set have sold out within the last eight days. The gold proof one ounce sold out the week prior. It would seem more coins would likely join the sell out list.

Morgan Dollars and the Politics of Silver

Morgan Dollars, a series long favored by American coin collectors, were struck in great quantity from 1878 through 1904, then again in 1921. The coin has a colorful history.

During the 1850s, gold prospectors passing through Nevada on their way to California were distracted by flecks of gold in rivers fed by runoff from Sierra Nevada range in California. Rivers in Nevada generally dry up in summer, which interfered with the simple panning methods favored by these inexperienced and ill-equipped enthusiasts.

Even those who actually attempted to mine, rather than pan, Nevada gold became frustrated with the over abundance of a bluish ore that continually clogged their mining machinery. When the gold ran out, many cleared out and moved on, leaving piles of the blue stuff behind.

The blue stuff was silver, soon to be called the Comstock Lode, the richest silver strike in US history.

As gold miners became silver miners, massive production ensued. Plunging silver prices were next, accompanied by the plaintive cries of the silver lobby. Congress was sensitive to the silver interests, and their financial support, passing the Bland-Allison Act in 1878 as a palliative.

And what a sop it was!

Bland-Allison came to the rescue, requiring the mint to strike one silver dollar for every paper dollar printed. That meant lots of Morgan silver dollars, many more silver dollars than would ever be needed for circulation.

Year after year the dollars were struck. They piled up in Federal bank vaults, and in lead lined rooms at the mints. (I remember touring the old San Francisco mint where I saw the many silver dollar sized circular impressions in the walls of a vault where these large coins were stored, packed tightly in canvas sacks of 1,000 pieces each.)

By 1904 silver production had flagged, and silver dollar mintage ceased. What to do with all the unused, unneeded silver dollars? The Pittman Act of 1919 directed that more than 270 million of these coins be melted and recoined into smaller denominations. (It also directed the mint to purchase an equivalent amount of silver bullion for future silver dollars!)

Despite the mass melting of the Pittman Act, Morgan Dollars remain relatively large quantities in mint state. As such, they are one of the great values in American numismatics.

Let's look at the numismatics collector scenario of investing. On my personal "do not buy" list are coins issued by the National Collector's Mint. The U.S. Mint has issued warnings about this company's misleading advertisements in the past, particularly its "Freedom Tower" coins. National Collector's Mint ads imply that Freedom Tower coins have meaningful amounts of precious metal in them when they do not. In addition, despite the perception they often give to the contrary, nothing this "Mint" makes has any association whatsoever with the genuine U.S. Mint, and it is my opinion that the coins they sell are, and will remain, virtually worthless as an investment collectible.

On my list of "do not buy" coins is those from the Franklin Mint and other premium collectibles mints (such as the Bradford Exchange, etc.) They are aggressive marketers who do sell genuine bullion coins (sometimes) but their coins usually do not have any after-market value among coin collectors and investors. You'll typically pay $45 plus for a one ounce silver coin that is only worth the value of its silver bullion when you go to sell it. (Silver bullion is at about $19 an ounce as I write this.)

There are two types of coins, those bought for their rarity or numismatic value and those bought for their precious metal bullion value. I recommend buying a one troy ounce bullion gold coin because they are much more affordable than numismatics and also for the same price you will get much more gold metal content which is the whole point of buying the coin (gold attracts wealth). Now that we have decided to buy a one troy once bullion coin, there are many selections. There are 22 karat coins and also 24 karat coins. Due to their durability, I recommend buying a 22 karat coin because they are much more resistant to nicks and scratches. The two best 22 karat coins to invest in are South African Krugerrands and US American Eagles. If you decide to go the 24 karat route, US Buffalos and Canadian Maple Leafs are the best choices. All four of these coins are very popular and readily exchangeable at coin dealers all around the world.

Coin Collecting - Avoid Worthless Silver Coins

Worthless silver dollars for collecting purposes is any circulated silver coin that is only in fair condition and has value to collectors beyond the value of the silver bullion it contains.

This is an unofficial term used in the United States and Canada. Junk silver is not scrap silver. These coins can still be spent in the US and Canadian markets for the value stamped on the coin. However, coin collectors call them �junk� because they have little numismatic, or trading, value.

The Mercury and Roosevelt dimes, the Washington quarters, and the Franklin and Kennedy half dollars are the most popular US coins collected for junk silver. These coins, minted before 1964, contain 90% silver composition, with 0.7 troy ounces of silver per each dollar of face value. Kennedy half-dollars minted from 1965 to 1970 contain 40% silver composition, so they are collected but are not as popular. The Peace Dollar (minted from 1921 to 1928, then again in 1934 and 1935) is also collected for its silver value, which is high at a little over 90%. However, these are more rare and may have collectible value beyond the value of the silver.

Circulated Canadian coins - dollars, half dollars, dimes and quarters - may also be sought for their silver value. These coins minted before 1966 contained 80% silver. In 1967, they transitioned to 50% silver by minting both 50% and 80% coins, but by 1968, they were all 50%.

While not as common as in the past, many junk silver coins are still in circulation in the United States and Canada. People wishing to collect junk silver can purchase these coins for a small premium over the price of silver at the current time. Especially during periods when the economy is stable, this has become an affordable way to invest in silver at levels below bullion prices. Because these coins are legal tender, they will never fall below their face value, regardless of how low silver may fall. The current values for the coins listed above range from $.90 to around $11 US. The Morgan Dollar and the Peace Dollar have the highest value, and the Mercury and Roosevelt dimes have the lowest.

Junk silver coins have become a popular collectible among survivalist. These individuals have speculated that a disaster or crisis will eventually occur which will render the paper currency worthless and that silver will be the currency of choice because of its inherent value.

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint is wrapping up the 50 State Quarters® Program, the national phenomenon that sent Americans searching through their change for the latest quarter to add to their collections. It is estimated that 147 million Americans have been collecting the coins in the 10-year 50 State Quarters Program, which has honored each state in the order it ratified the U.S. Constitution or was admitted into the Union. The program, authorized by Congress, kicked off in early 1999 with the introduction of the Delaware quarter and concludes at the end of 2008 with the Hawaii commemorative quarter-dollar coin.

"This groundbreaking initiative has been the most successful coin program in the Nation's history," said United States Mint Director Ed Moy, who participated in the launch ceremony for the Hawaii quarter on November 10, 2008. "The 50 State Quarters Program has educated a generation of Americans about the history and geography of the States. It has also generated tremendous state pride and encouraged citizens to consider which images should symbolize the region where they live."

The first rule is � no matter the coin � never use harsh abrasives like silver polish. Abrasives scrape the top layer off of whatever they are polishing, and in the case of a coin, that top layer contains all of its detail and hence its numismatic value. Polishing in this way will leave the surface of the coin covered with tiny pits and scratches, not exactly conducive to preserving the coin's value. If you clean the coin using an abrasive, you'll get a shiny coin, but it will not be a coin that collectors are interested in. To see for yourself, try it on a penny, especially one from before 1982 (when they were 95% copper). The coin will be shiny and clean, but if you compare it to a similar coin, you will see that it also looks unnatural. Shiny, yes, but it will not look like it looked naturally when it was minted. Collectors eschew coins that don't look natural.

According to many experts, the best type of investment coins are rarer, key date coins issued by the United States, in the best grade you can afford to buy them in. If you can't afford to shell out $2,000 a coin to buy key dates in high grades, then buy common coins in the finest grades you can. Lower grade, common coins have historically not appreciated as much in value as key date coins do, so they are probably not a good investment choice (although they're great for filling up the holes in albums, especially with kids helping out!)

Whatever method you try to clean a coin, it's best to test it on a non-valuable coin of similar metal first. That way if a certain method does have bad effects, you'll find out before you ruin a valuable coin. I discovered this much to my chagrin when cleaning a batch of 1943 steel pennies in an acid solution. I'll never know if it would have worked, because I had the pennies in a galvanized steel container and the acid, combined with the galvanization, fused the pennies into one worthless chunk.

The best type of pick box for finding honest to goodness bargains is the flat-rate so-called "junk box." These are boxes into which the dealer has thrown coins that he has determined are not worth his time to catalog and price individually. Sometimes coins get thrown in there just because they're low grade. Other times, the coins might be high grade but just really common. Some dealers even throw in their "attribution challenges!" This latter type of pick box is, by far, the most profitable and most interesting for the cherrypicker! In reality though, most pick boxes contain a mixture of two or more categories of these types of coins. (Attribution challenges are coins that the dealer can't find in his coin catalogs. These are most often seen in World coins, but I've even found genuine U.S. Pre-Federal Colonial Copper coins in junk boxes marked "Misc. Tokens - $2 Each.")

Among my top five worst coin investments are modified coins, such as genuine U.S. Mint products that have been altered by adding holographics or coloring. These coins are generally considered "damaged" by serious coin collectors, and you will only get the bullion value when you go to sell them, if that. American Eagle Bullion Gold Coins - How to Buy and Invest

American Eagle Bullion Gold Coins are an excellent way to begin and diversify any investment portfolio. Before you buy any kind of investment, however, it is important to know about what you are buying.

First, the bullion coins are 22 karat gold coins, made by the U.S. Mint, and is fully backed by the US Government. Originally introduced in 1986, the coins have become and excellent way to get into the gold market.

The Kangaroo gold coin was first produced in 1986. The Australian Gold Nugget/Kangaroo coin is one of the most popular coins created by the Perth Mint in Western Australia. Perhaps the most diverse of any nation's bullion coinage, the Gold Australian Nugget/Kangaroo is minted in eight different sizes from 1/20th of an ounce all the way up to 1-kilogram. The design on the reverse originally depicted natural Australian gold nuggets (example right), with different designs for various sizes. The design theme changed in 1989 to feature the most recognizable animal in Australia, the kangaroo (example above).
